Write a card

Someone wrote to you, and now you can write something back. You may, you needn't, and it needn't be much either: a few lines already give the other person great pleasure. Grab your two codes, and you're ready to begin.

Your message to a stranger

Tell something small and ordinary from your day. A habit of yours, something you always enjoy, or something you spotted outside this morning. Write the way you speak, clever lines aren't needed. Up to 2000 characters. We add the recipient's first name at the top ourselves.
Example: "I always eat my plate clean from right to left. Nobody gets it, but I've done it for years." Or: "There was a song stuck in my head this morning that I just couldn't shake."

A person reads every card before it goes in the post. Keep it friendly: no swearing, no addresses or phone numbers. If a card doesn't fit, we won't send it on.

Is the blank box staring back at you? Then answer a few of these little questions in your own words, you don't have to fill in all of them. We'll put your answers neatly one below the other in your card, and after that you can calmly tweak them or take them out. That way you've got a few sentences down after all.

Sometimes it's nice if the other person can write something back to you too. Want to keep that open? Then choose below how you give your details. Rather not? Just leave it all blank, then you stay anonymous. Only we see your address, the other person never does.

Filling in an address or account code so the other person can write back? Then put one everyday question somewhere in your card. That way the other person has something to carry on writing about.

Prefer to write by hand? Send your card by post to Schrijfmaatje, Vuurdoornstraat 9B, 8924 AT Leeuwarden, and we'll enter it for you. Want the other person to be able to write back to you? Then add your own address too. Only we see it, the other person never does.

It's on the back of the card you received, and it belongs to this one card.

Account code (from your welcome letter)

It's on the back of your welcome card and on your welcome letter. Keep them safe, you need this code again every time.

Doing this for someone else, or is someone helping you from a distance? Just fill in their two codes, or read them out calmly. Capitals and dashes make no difference.

Your reply

Just write what you want to say, you don't have to give a name or an address. Something ordinary from your day works fine, and a few lines are already enough to make the other person's day.

Prefer paper? Cut off the strip at the bottom of the note, write your account code in the empty boxes and send it with your reply to Schrijfmaatje, Vuurdoornstraat 9B, 8924 AT Leeuwarden. No strip anymore? Then put your conversation code and your account code with your reply, because those two together keep it safe. We'll pass it on anonymously after that.

Lost your account code? It's on your welcome letter. Can't find that letter anymore? Request a new letter, and we'll send the same account code again by post.

Not sending a reply is fine too, the card was for you.

What do you write about?

No idea what to write? Very ordinary works best. Tell something small from your day: what you ate, what you saw outside, a song that was stuck in your head, or a habit of yours that nobody else gets. Write the way you speak, because it's the everyday that makes a card personal. Clever lines really aren't needed.

Add one question somewhere, so the other person has something to write back about straight away. For example: "What's the first thing you hear in the morning?" Or ask about the view from their window. A few lines is already plenty, it's not about the length but about the gesture.
